There are two interesting claims as to the cause of the sellout. On the homepage of the Touchpad site they say:
Due to the significant price reduction, we experienced overwhelming demand for the product and are temporarily out of inventory.
Then, on the subsequent page HP go on to state
We have received unprecedented orders as a result of the tremendous discount offered. This is clear confirmation to HP there is huge interest in building a webOS community.
Is it price? Or is it the webOS community? Not sure it can be both.
I find this fascinating, plus, I quite like HP as a brand so I will continue to post interesting tidbits as I come across them.

Is it that no one can compete with Apple? Clearly Apple has the cool and the cult factor which took them years to cultivate, hone and earn. Is it that plonking product on the shelves without community engagement is not a marketing strategy? Is that the developer community needed to be engaged so the app market had more than a handful of apps when the tablet went to market? Or is it that the Touchpad was really a good product that was sacrificed to a broader business strategy focusing on more profitable areas of the business than hardware, . Or is it all of the above?
